There's no way to walk the fields of America collecting corpses and coming up with a total, definitive mortality number. But we need a long term study of the impacts of each human cause of bird deaths, and we need it to be government backed and peer reviewed.
Predatory cats including house cats were estimated to kill about 100 million birds a year, which the Forest Service called a "conservative" figure.
In all, the service estimates that as many as one billion birds die of human related causes every year.

I'm not convinced. And until we know more, I'm not ready to judge.
But some cite particularly high numbers of bird deaths at the hands or blades, I suppose of wind towers. Many talk about those deaths as if they're particularly heinous, or as if the towers are the chief cause of bird mortality in the country.
So, what's the point? We don't know enough.

The document also studied other causes of deaths. The Forest Service reviewed literature estimating bird deaths per year from building collisions anywhere from 97 to 975 million. The service used the studies to estimate a number closer to 130 million.
The numbers above were estimates. Every study used gives different estimates, and estimates aren't good enough.
But does the industry kill enough birds to justify the moral outrage declared by some? What do you think?
One thing many people will tell you lots of birds die, and for a plethora of reasons.
million and oil spills between 10,000 and 100,000, also estimates.
The biggest answer needed to enlighten our discussion is just how many birds die because of wind turbines every year. According to a study published in the Wildlife Society Bulletin, a peer reviewed scientific publication printed by The Wildlife Society, that number is somewhere around 575,000, including 83,000 hunting birds.
While the number of birds is of concern, the KIND of bird being killed by turbines is even more concerning. They're creating mortality on birds that aren't at risk by cats or large buildings or planes. The bigger birds (raptors, eagles, owls) are long lived and have low reproductive rates. They're like the grizzly bears of the bird world. They have no way to compensate for excessive mortality. In May of 2013 a wind developer was 2017 Air Max Pink granted the right (by a presidential order) for its wind installation to kill condors. In Ontario, the endangered species act was gutted in early 2013 to allow wind developers to "kill, harass, harm and destroy" endangered species! THIS is the problem!
It's not the number of birds killed that's outrageous, it's the double standard involved. According to this Associated Press report: "Wind farms in [ Converse County] have killed more than four dozen golden eagles since 2009, one of the deadliest places in the country of its kind."But so far, the companies operating industrial sized turbines here and elsewhere that are killing eagles and other protected birds have yet to be fined or prosecuted even though every death is a criminal violation. Attorney David M. Gaouette said in 2009 when announcing Exxon Mobil had pleaded guilty and would pay $600,000 for killing 85 birds in five states, including Wyoming. ."The Obama administration has refused to accept that cost when the fossil fuel industry is to blame. The BP oil company was fined $100 million for killing and harming migratory birds during the 2010 Gulf oil spill. Passionate views, pointed criticism and critical thinking are welcome. Like it or not, "wind kills birds" is common anti wind rhetoric. I'm not saying I don't care whether wind kills birds especially endangered or otherwise special species or that we shouldn't do everything we can to protect wildlife and the environment. I'm saying we need to know more.

Until we do know more, there are far more relevant arguments against the industry, both true and speculative.
To a person, that number sounds huge. Nearly 600,000 people dying of a single cause be it in one day or a year is almost an epidemic. But is that a large number of birds? I've been trying to figure that out for months. Forest Service publication which, honestly, would indicate birds have bigger problems. The study published by the service in 2005 is more a literature review than actual study, but the numbers are pretty jarring.
Researchers cited studies that estimated bird deaths at the hands of transportation planes, trains and automobiles, if you're a John Candy fan totaling anywhere from 10.7 million to 380 million every year. A more recent study used in the document put the number between 60 and 80 million.
Wind does kill birds. I don't think that's arguable. But so do many, many things that we've built. And we could argue all day about whether we need those things.
Literature used in the review estimated bird deaths from communication towers somewhere between four and five million per year. About 67 million annual estimated deaths were tied to pesticides. Oil pits killed 1.5 Nike Air Max Ladies Trainers

YOU SHOUTED YOUR COMMENT IN ALL CAPS. This is hard to read and annoys readers.
By the way, it also estimated somewhere between 21,000 and 37,000 total bird deaths per year from wind turbines, with just under 1,000 raptor deaths. Those numbers were based on turbine population in 2003, so they're likely much higher now.
