Southwestern Ontarians have seen the worst of humans and exotic animals, too often because Ontario relies on a patchwork quilt of municipal bans and bylaws not provincial legislation to govern the ownership and care of exotic animals in homes and roadside zoos.
The plan was to ship four harbour seals from an 1950s era children theme park in Storybook Gardens in London, Ont., to a new home at the famed St. Louis Zoo, where they join California sea lions at a new, 0.6 hectare, $18 million marine park opening this week.
Professionally handled, they were crated and trucked in an air conditioned trailer. While the autopsy results aren in yet, early speculation has zeroed in on the stress such a move 12 to 14 hours might have exacted on the seals.
